🎤 Speaker of the Week: Alex Villanueva
(Former LA County Sheriff)

A Legacy of Leadership and Reform

Alex Villanueva began his career with the Los
Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
in 1986,
rising through the ranks over three decades
of service.

Early on, he led the successful effort to ban
smoking in the County jail system, improving
health conditions for inmates and staff. While
serving in East Los Angeles, he helped pioneer
one of the nation’s first community policing
teams under the COPS program launched
during the administration of Bill Clinton.

Villanueva served as a Drill Instructor, Sergeant,
Lieutenant, Watch Commander, and County
Sheriff from 2018-2022. He also shared his
expertise as an adjunct professor at
California State University, Long Beach.

His career reflects a strong commitment to
reform, leadership, and community partnership.

It's always fun and exciting to see the faces
of those present when we begin to announce
the qualities of the selected Rotarian of the
Month – the curious glances and the quiet
guesses around the room. This past
Wednesday was no different.

Congratulations to Debbie for her outstanding
service, her consistency, and her commitment
to our club and its projects. We are grateful
for all you do and proud to celebrate you!

Brady Connell - His Journey
To District Governor 👨‍⚖️

It was an inspiring opportunity to hear Brady
share the story of his journey to District
Governor
and the experience that shaped
his path to leadership.

Brady began by sharing that his decision to
pursue the role of District Governor grew from
a desire to expand Rotary's impact – locally,
across the district, and globally
. A visit to Rotary
International
World Headquarters and the Zone
Institute in San Diego, where he connected with
district leaders from across the country, inspired
him to apply for District Governor of
Rotary District 5280.

After an intense interview process and two
years of training, he will officially take office
on July 1, 2026
, for the 2026-2027
Rotary year.

Since joining PVSR in 2016, Brady has immersed himself in leadership and service at the club,
district, and zone levels. RYLA was just one of
the many impactful events that deepened his connection to Rotary – along with active
participation in district gatherings, education
trainings, and his first International Convention
– all helping prepare him for his next chapter.
He closed with his guiding motto:

"Have Fun & Get It Done."

Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary is honored to be
Brady's home club. We are excited and prepared
to support him through his governorship!
