Coming up this Wednesday
This could be you, helping a deserving Veteran at LAX very soon!
This week, we are honoring an organization that supports World War 2 and Korean war Veterans: Southland Honor Flight. They organize trips for the veterans to go to Washington DC and visit the memorials built for them. For most, it’s the highlight of their lifetime! Their co-founder and President Craig Van Doren will be our speaker. He will share with us what they do and how our club will very soon support their mission! Tony Ciancimino
Celebration of life
Judith Ciancimino is inviting us to celebrate the life of her late husband and our Past President Tony Ciancimino on Sunday September 25 at 1pm at the Elks Lodge in Playa del Rey .
Light refreshments and musical entertainment will be provided.
Dress Code: Your brightest colors. Please do not wear all black as this is not a funeral and Tony would not have wanted a colorless day ever.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club for the Tony Ciancimino Memorial Fine Arts Scholarship. Tony was constantly trying to make the world around him a brighter and more beautiful place.

Arabian Nights Auction items needed
Tracey Thompson-Busa writes:
We already have great items for the live and silent auctions but we still need everyone’s contribution: We could still use help and suggest each member to commit to bring in one auction item!
Best sellers are sports tickets, hotels, family packages and anything to do with food! Restaurant gift certificates or food baskets are great sellers. Please try to keep the fair market value of the items at $25 and up. We need all Cultural Dinner auction items in by Oct 3rd if possible. Please contact Tracey & Rob (birddotkom@aol.com) and let them know what you can bring . Thank you in advance!

Camp Pendleton Collection
There are over 10,000 children at Camp Pendleton and more than 160 babies are born there each month! Most are very low income and cannot afford care for their newborn and small children, as well as furnish their apartments.
Rotary is having a donation collection event! You can donate baby items, including diapers, housewares, small appliances and non-perishable food. Gently used items are also accepted! We will be collecting donations at the next two Wednesday meetings on 9/21 and 9/28. If you have a question or have items but cannot be at the meeting, contact Ramona (ramonaivy@gmail.com) to arrange for a different drop off location.

Gail and local Rotarians from Belize enjoying coconut milk and venison ceviche!
Gail Brooks in Belize
Gail Brooks returned recently from Belize. She was part of an exploratory trip with Governor Olivia to plan the district humanitarian trip from March 23 to March 31, 2023. In a few weeks, we will have more details for those interested to join the trip. When I asked her how she felt about the trip, she said :”I am grateful to have the opportunity to be part of helping. Joining with the hard working Belizean Rotarians is a great honor.”

Positive thoughts to those who are not well
I know of a few Rotarians or their family members who are not feeling well these days. Some had recent surgeries, others progressive chronic conditions and some are going through tests. Wishing all to see the light at the end of the tunnel soon! I, myself, had a health scare recently: I slowed down to restart healthy habits that I had neglected.
I share with you the quote that Bobbie Casalino-Lewis wrote and sent me: “Keeping a glow of self love Is the light at the end of the tunnel right in one's' pocket “ -Bobbie-ism

LAST BUT NOT LEAST
I end this newsletter by sharing Kurtis Sundblom’s recent inspiration at our meeting. I was touched by his thought linking inspiration, service and action. My hope is that Rotary inspires each one of us to be kind community leaders, better members of the workforce and loving family members. Kurtis said:
“You need inspiration to have the desire to serve and to take action. Rotary is not Rotary without the inspiration to put service above self. At every meeting, a member starts us with an inspirational message, then during the meeting, we share Rotary Moments that inspire us to give just a little bit more of ourselves than we thought possible”
Kurtis ended by saying:”I hope to have inspired you to have a wonderful day, a beautiful week and to share a kind smile in passing with a stranger. You never know…your smile may be the inspiration someone needs.”
Dear Rotarians and friends, today this is also my wish for each person reading this, and for your families!
Joe Chehade, President
Let’s be a Family
