Rotary Club OF
A Cup of Joe...3rd Sip

We all seek to be happy in our lives and spend time and money to get it. I’ve been following some research about the science of Happiness lately. It led me to  Dr Laurie Santos, a Yale professor who’s research proved the following: When we are unhappy, we think of self-care. We treat ourselves to nice things. However, research shows that happy people spend more time thinking about other people. They give more to charity annually; they spend more time volunteering their time, not focused on self-care. They want to help other people and do random acts of kindness. One study showed that gifting someone a massage does more good than getting a massage ourselves!

In my opinion, this is why Rotary is a source of true Happiness!

Putin's adventure in Ukraine - Any hope for an end to the war?

Join us to the meeting this Wednesday to listen to our speaker Jonathan Harris who will give a policy briefing on the current situation in Ukraine and the Russian invasion, the international response, and Putin’s agenda, with up-to-date maps and commentary on where things are headed. We will give time to Q& A at the end.

If you are not able to be there in-person, consider joining Zoom:

Due to the increase in Covid numbers, and for everyone's safety, we will switch to meeting outdoors on the patio starting on Wednesday July 27. We are very lucky to hold our meeting in a prime location overlooking the Marina! We might start this Wednesday if the restaurant management has time to accommodate the change.
Please join Zoom if you have any cold symptoms.
By popular demand, we can now buy raffle tickets with credit/debit cards. Lisa, our treasurer, will be ready with the Square device that our club recently purchased!
We resurrected an old "position" for our meeting. A GREETER, to make sure everyone feels welcome and and "at home." Rotarians can volunteer monthly for that position. Naturally, HILTON is our first candidate. Please greet him and thank him!
Last week's meeting
Keely Scarlata wrote: We had an incredible, energy filled meeting. We welcomed Vida Ash and Kurtis Sundblom to our Rotary family! they both exemplify all of the qualities of a Rotarian and we are excited for the talents they will bring to our group. A big thank you to Brady Connell for the induction. Beverly Hills Rotary President JR Dzubak attended our meeting with his exuberant personality and confetti Cannon to celebrate our new inductees!
Gail Brooks presented this year's district Humanitarian trip to Belize. Gail is the Co-Chair of that event and we are proud of her dedication!
We acongratulated James Frawley on his milestone 50th birthday and were happy to see Keely Scarlata back from her Honeymoon in Europe!
Kathrine Russell received a precious Ruby +6 Paul Harris pin. Thank you kathrine for your generosity!

Our friendship with The Rotary club of Beverly Hills is growing. Their President, JR Dzubak invited 10 of us to join their meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Their welcome was very warm. We presented JR with a personalized gift. We were treated to a nice mini-concert during the meeting. Thanks JR and Beverly Hills Rotarians! SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR HOMELESS STUDENTS

Support our first District-wide community service project of the year! We are hosting a school supply drive benefiting children experiencing homelessness enrolled in Inglewood Unified School District. Items will be collected at the August 14 District Brunch. Click here for a list of needed items. Bring these items to our Wednesday meeting and we will take them to the District Brunch

Please continue to check with neighbors, friends and co-workers about unused mobility devices, such as walkers, canes, crutches, boots, wheelchairs etc. You can bring them to the meeting or to Playa Pharmacy. Questions? email Bonnie at

Our District Liaison Lucy Wegner writes:
Sunday Brunch, August 14 1-3pm, Proud Bird Restaurant
There will be a signup sheet on Wednesday OR you can sign up online: District Sunday Brunch | Rotary Club of Playa Venice Sunrise. The Club covers the cost for 10 attendees and our own Peter Smyth has offered to cover the cost for our “extras”.
District Picnic, Saturday September 3, Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach
Note change of date!
We have 2 immediate needs:
1)    Boat Race planners/coordinators/crew. We need 1-3 persons to build the boat. We do have a detailed design ready to execute, select boat “crew” and organize volunteers for the build.
2)    Dessert table coordinator. Our club provides a dessert table for this event. We need coordinators to track donations and manage the table and volunteers on the day
If you can help with either of these, sign up tomorrow or let Lucy Wegner ( know.
