CARING FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT

“Caring for our environment” Rated G (for Green)

The environment has taken a front page in our lives lately: In California, record heat temperatures, extreme drought conditions and the increasing pressure on our power grid are not future problems; they touch our lives daily and are costing our society billions of dollars and many lost lives.

As Rotarians, we are not indifferent to this global issue. Rotary International approved creating a new area of focus: Supporting the environment. More than $18 million in Foundation global grant funding has been allocated to environment related projects over the past five years. It will give Rotary members even more ways to bring about positive change in the world and increase our impact. Read more HERE

What’s our Club doing about it? We are partnering locally with Friends of Ballona Wetlands, whose stated mission is: Championing the restoration and protection of Los Angeles’ last coastal wetland and educating our diverse community as stewards of nature. Check them out in this 2-minute video.

Our speaker this week is the Friends of Ballona Manager of Scientific Programs: Neysa Frechette

Neysa graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology & a Master of Natural Resources Degree from Oregon State University, with an emphasis in Wildlife Management. Let’s be many at the meeting or on Zoom to welcome her, get inspired and learn about her passion and efforts to save the environment in “our backyard.”

Our club has started supporting The Friends of Ballona financially. Some of us will also attend their fundraising event on September 10 “Moonlight on the Marsh.” Moreover, our Cultural Dinner Honoree, Nancy Edwards  (pictured below) is the Vice President on their Board of Directors.

My hope is that this focus will help us brainstorm in the next few weeks on how to better support our environment on all personal, professional & club levels. Every action counts! Have an idea? Please share it!

Congratulations to Howard Pollack & Gwen Vuchsas who are hereby declared the...

2022 Bowlerians*

of the Year!

When I asked Hilton about Howard’s performance, He said: “When a gentleman brings his own ball, it’s not his first rodeo… Howard has been bowling for 70 years!” Regarding the undefeated Gwen, he added: “We are amazed by her consistency and the longevity of her wins. No ladies come close to challenging her and she bests most men, including me!

A special mention to James Frawley who  had the single top game of and Ilene Florin’s very high score!

*(Bowlerian is a combination of Bowling and Rotarian. It’s a "portmanteau" word I just made up! A portmanteau is a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others, for example motel, from ‘motor’ and ‘hotel’ or brunch, from ‘breakfast’ and ‘lunch’, frappuccino (frappé + cappuccino) electrocute (electricity + execute )

Annual district picnic

A couple hundred Rotarians and their families spent Saturday afternoon in Redondo Beach enjoying BBQ, Chili cook-off, Karaoke and the cardboard boat race. Our Club’s participation made this event even sweeter!

Thank you to Carla, Bonnie, Melissa, Gail and Tom who worked hard to prepare and be there, and thanks to all those who donated desserts!

Thank you Tom for helping to set up the table!

Jorg and his 3 munchkins!

We were very happy to see The Rotarian of the Year “Kristen and Glenn,” as well as our past President Katie Butler Litsey with her family.

Last but not least

An inspiration that helped me this week...

"We always have the tendency to think about the faults of others, to remember their past, to wish they were different. Instead, let’s try to see them with new eyes, see them as new people, accepting them as they are, even if they do not change. Take heart! I assure you that you will experience peace as never before and a new Joy!"
