Welcome to the PVSR Weekly Newsletter
2025 - 2026  Vol. 8

In times of uncertainty and division, friendship
offers us solace through shared connection, community, and support. Within these bonds,
we find common ground and the strength to
make our world a little brighter, calmer, and
more united. Guided by the spirit of Service
Above Self, we come together as friends,
working hand in hand toward
a common purpose.

This Week's Guest Speaker:
🎤 Monika White

Join us on Wednesday, August 20th, to hear
a remarkable story of survival from the fellow Rotarian who lived it. Monika White and her
twin sister, Gitta Morris, were born in the
Hongkew District of Shanghai and lived in
what became the Shanghai Jewish Ghetto.
They were there for eight years, including the
2 1/2 years of WWII, where they were interned
by the Japanese. Monika will share what their
life was like in the Ghetto and their memories
and experiences of loss, fear, hunger, and some
happy times.
She will also talk about their move
to the US and the lives they have built as adults.

Monika White, PhD, is a retired social worker
and gerontologist and an Adjunct Professor at
USC. She is a 30-year member of the Rotary
Club of Santa Monica
and is the Immediate Past
President of the Club
. She volunteers for several
non-profits, including the Jewish Family Services
Holocaust Program. She and her sister Gitta speak several times a month at the Los Angeles Museum
of Tolerance, the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum,
temples, churches, schools, and private home
gatherings. Recently, they were invited to
Connecticut and Pennsylvania to share
their story.

🚗 On the Road with
Charles Pannunzio

Our featured speaker was Sergeant at Arms
Charles Pannunzio, who shared photos and a
couple of stories from his vacation on the East
Coast
in late July. Charles and his wife Christina traveled through 13 states, and saw more than
a dozen baseball games, including his first trip
to the two new stadiums in New York City.
Over
the course of the last 35 years, Charles
has
visited 29 of the 30 Major League Baseball
stadiums
. Still on the bucket list is the
stadium in Arlington, Texas.

They also visited the state capitols in New
York, Maine and Vermont and stopped by Paul
Harris' boyhood home in Wallingford, Vermont,
which theyhappened to find by shear luck.
