Each week President Jim will offer his thoughts to Tony Ciancimino who in turn will share them with his fellow Rotarians and friends of the Club.

Dear Rotarians and friends,

We hit the floor running this week  with a very full meeting, many announcements and numerous upcoming events.

President Jim brought the Club up to date with news of two members. While Gale LaBarre is sill in the hospital, she took a recent turn for the better. We thank God for the good news, please keep her in your thoughts and prayers! Then Jim told us that Chris Kishida from the Marina Hospital will be leaving her post on October 5th. She is going to spend sometime with family in Cleveland and then come back to decide where her next steps will take her. Fortunately she's promised to stay in touch with the Club and visit us and attend some activities. We wish her well, she's a good friend and great Rotarian!

The Cultural Dinner is rapidly approaching, October 18th will be her before we know it. Gwen reminded us that as Playa Venice Rotarians we all have responsibilities for this Brazilian tribute to Carnival. Support the attendance is obvious. Tickets are $75 each and while we can take credit cards our Standing Rules do not allow us to bill members for Foundation functions.  Each member is required to provide a bottle of wine valued at $20 or more. Contact Anne Algaze to either drop off your wine or $20 for her to purchase wine for you. We also need donations for raffle prizes and silent auction items. We can't wait until the last minute to gather these items, the load is lighter when shared by many.

ImageOur Animo Venice Interact Club has also been very busy. A week ago they gathered at Tore Knos' home to make low cost water purification indicators (WAPIs) for use in Mexico. Their Club is sponsoring the cost of necessary tools. Tore gave us a few words on on the Interacters activities.

Lisa Schwab announced that Cantalini's Express is having a "soft" Grand Opening, but will be celebrating all October. Check it out on Face Book! https://www.facebook.com/CantalinisExpress

Kathrine Russell reminded everyone that the Paul Harris Celebration is coming up on October 22nd. We've each been given a book of raffle tickets to either buy or sell. Event details are on our Club's homepage. While she had the floor President Jim asked her if she'd been traveling recently and it turns out that she'd just had a Mexican vacation. Ka ching, $25.

Clarence Griffin advised that those people who would like to help out in driving seniors about town can volunteer through the Westchester Village program. Get application from him.

This week's speaker were Denny Schneider and Craig Eggers of the Neighborhood Council came to bring us up to date on LAX expansion. The good the bad and the ugly. It gave us a grim view of fact vs. fiction about what we're being told by the airport. If you want more information you can contact either through the Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa (www.ncwpdr.org/) We appreciated their overview.

It was time to dig in to support Polio Plus through the auction of another "Bear Essential." Gail Goldstein and Dan Kolodziejski partnered at $50 each Imagefor an evening's entertainment of Hatfields and McCoys DVD, candy and popcorn. It's going to be movie night at somebody's house.

While no one has picked the Ace of Spades in the 50/50 drawing, Tom Dixon did pull a $25 Joker. Congratulations Tom! The pot will be $815 for next week.

President Jim wrapped up the meeting by showing the recent pullout section on the Club that appeared in last week's Argonaut. This is our second consecutive year of putting this PR piece together. We will be getting a supply of paper to use in future membership and PR efforts. He also made a Club pin presentation to our favorite exchange student Ensa Jenssen. It was as great to have her with us as it was to be able to honor her. Image
