Each week President Jim  will offer his thoughts to Tony Ciancimino who in turn will share them with his fellow Rotarians and friends of the Club.

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends,

The question of the day, where to begin? So much has happened in the last 7 days, probably an indicator of what is to come. A full Rotary year!

ImageLet's jump back to Saturday morning and the early risers who manned our booth at Jet to Jetty. This was a first effort for us, creating a presence at the race. Not only were we very visible, but also very active! While the older or maybe less motivated, manned our Playa Venice booth at Jet to Jetty, our 5K walking team, Jimmy's Sunrise Posse hit the street. They did us proud, sporting our colors. Meanwhile back at the booth, the cerebral portion of our volunteers dedicated their efforts to spreading the word about Playa Venice Rotary via a handouts (courtesy of Rainbow Acres and Mr. Generosity, Howard Pollack) of a Playa Venice energy pack of trail mix. 400 packages found their way into the appreciative crowd. Not only were we represented on the "walk" course, but we had member runners too. Christina Davis tackled the 5K course and Don ate up the 10K run, winning in his ageless class. Big time congrats, from one who was exhausted just watching them run. Dan made a donation to the effort of $200 in consideration of his mom's many years of service on the AMCS Board of Directors. These funds sponsored our walking team.

Slow forward to Saturday night, truly a red carpet evening. It was our Murder Mystery Potluck Party. No great surprise that the eats were great, we are blessed with a lot of talent in that area, but who knew the acting talent we enjoy. TheImage Club turned out with sparkle and glitter, from the Sinatra like look sported but our President, to the slinky Katie in her designer outfit, to the Sunset Boulevard-ish Gail as the party's "hostess." All the bases were touched (with a sound effect, here and there.) Judith Ciancimino went all out to inform the "cast," decorate the "set" and to get everyone in the sprit. Thanks to the Vuchi for allowing kleig lights on their front lawn and donating their home for the evening.

All of Saturday was a true example of "success through teamwork!"

Please note, on the home page of our website, we have updated and included photos from Jet to Jetty and the Murder Mystery Party.

ImageWed.'s meeting featured Lisa  Triffletti, North-side Project Manager, for LAWA. She updated the Club on future development plans for areas surrounding the airport owned but non-flight operational ares of LAWA project. She was joined by Westchester Rotarian Geoff Maleman who assisted Lisa in her presentation. Lisa was informative and well spoken, which considering her numerous degrees, was not surprising.

Judith Wilson and Pam are still looking for people to sign up for the 9/9 District Picnic desert table, to both man and stock it. Currently we have over 22 people signed up to watch the triumph of Bear Force One, our boat entry. It was noted that the rowers (Tom Carson, Katie and Tore) are in training and the boat has been built. Now we need to slap (I was there last year, you could not call it painting) color on the boat. Christina volunteered her Corey to the decoration effort.

David Maury of The Argonaut joined us this week to review the procedure for supporting the 9/20 Playa Venice pull out section of our favorite weekly newspaper. The amount of money dedicated and donated towards advertising directly effects the amount of space we are allowed to tell our story. It is by design that this issue will be published one month in advance of our largest annual fund raiser, our cultural dinner. This allows us to also bang the drum for this all important event! Those members and friends who invest and advertise will be helping the Club on multiple levels.

ImageOn Wednesday we recognized our July/Aug. birthdays. Our new Club gift, padfolios were unveiled. Being a non-singing Club, not unlike the American League of Major League Baseball, we had a "designated singer," Lucy Wegner, represent us in singing the birthday anthem. Not only did Lucy represent us well, she also reaffirmed why, sans herself, we don't sing. Thanks Lucy for melodically making us better!

Noting that Greg Eckhardt had had a birth in the family we "passed the hat" to start his child's college fund with matching funds from the Club. Congratulation Greg!

President Jim got the ball rolling on his Polio Plus "Bear Essentials" auction. To date we have raised $200 towards a goal of $1,000 for the year. This week's offering got heavy bidding for a caffeine laden prize of coffee and a gift card  won by Lisa (as in Cantalini's Express) Schwab at $75.00

When brag time rolled around Gwen jumped up to recognize Tore's son's movie, which she and Jim viewed on Tues. as a great cinema experience. Tears did roll at the end of the movie. Abel's Field is highly recommended to all! Tore, you have great reason to be proud! Gwen donated $25 in honor of USC grad Tore Jr.'s movie.

Thanks to Don Culton, Judith Ciancimino and Gen Vuchsas for their photographic input!
