Success Through Teamwork 8/22/12

Each week President Jim will offer his thoughts to Tony Ciancimino who in turn will share them with his fellow Rotarians and friends of the Club.
Dear fellow Rotarians and friends,
"Unaccustomed as he is to public speaking," our very own David Voss took the podium this week to review the workings of Project Amigos, the building of casitas (small houses) in Mexico. Efforts don't get any more hands on than this one. Unfortunately safety issues have precluded our return in recent years. David is checking to see if an "all clear" has been declared and if we can restart the program. David wrapped up his offering with an update on this year's cardboard boat for the 9/9 District Picnic. As last year's champions we have important "turf" (water?) to defend. Based on David's report our entry, Bear Force One, will live up to the task. I am sad to report that we did have a casualty. My wife took pictures of the building of the boat, so we had to kill her. She'll be missed. (the devil made me say it, sorry!)
President Jim called the amazing boat builders, David and Tom Ryan, to the podium for a "photo op" with their President (stand up Bear!)
Gwen briefed the membership about the 8/25 Jet to Jetty race. We are looking for people to walk in the 5K as a Playa Venice team, contact President Bear, I mean Jim, if interested. Our own long distance expert Don will be running. Set up will begin at 6:30 AM, but we should be in good shape if volunteers arrive at 7:00 AM. If attending tell the parking people that you are a vendor, for free parking. Plan on being there for several hours as there is no leaving the lot once the race has begun.
To round out Saturday we'll have our Murder Mystery Potluck Dinner. The late Judith Ciancimino handed out parts and gave an overview of how things will be run. It was very strongly emphasized that attendees must be on time. We'll start at 5:00 PM! Who knows, maybe Judith will get her revenge and kill me.
Judith Wilson reported that we have over 17 adults signed up for the District Picnic on 9/9, where we will once again prevail as best boat builders and rowers in 5280! She needs feedback on who is bringing what desert.
Katie, Katie married lady reminded all about the 8/23 free concert in Burton Chace Park and the 9/15 Dodger Game supporting Polio Plus. If interested in the baseball game advise Katie ASAP as she has to respond by tomorrow, at the latest. While she had our attention, she and Don advised that our Animo Venice Interacters hit the floor running with over 40 attendees at their first meeting. This is over twice last year's participation. It seems the banners and pins we provided last year (and some very active electioneering by Christian Culton) really motived the students. Way to go Animo Venice and our thanks to Beth Abronson, their advisor!
Somehow Clarence missed being fined this week. He brought a beautiful date to breakfast, his daughter. However, Chef Lisa didn't duck fast enough and President Jim took $20 for her being named a favorite restaurant in The Hometown News survey. Jon broke big news announcing that he is joining Target in their executive program. Now that he has a "target" on his back President Jim shot him for $40. Traveling man Dan is just back from visiting my relatives in Italy and dropped a $50 brag for it. Our other world traveler, Don (Culton not Corleone) went to the London Olympics and had $20 to spare on a brag.
Two members were seen planning a party with their raffle prize winning. Isn't sharing the Rotarian way?
Thanks to the late Judith Ciancimino for this weeks photos.
