Each week President Jim  will offer his thoughts to Tony Ciancimino who in turn will share them with his fellow Rotarians and friends of the Club.

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends,

This week had a very energized meeting, with full tables great guests and super news.

President Jim invited Gail to the podium to complete some unfinished business from the recent Demotion Party. Gail brought Jon up to join her and to be sworn in as Sargent at Arms. Jon has accepted the duties of his office with enthusiasm and diligence. It is a pleasure to welcome him to the Board of Directors.

Our next pleasure was to welcome special guests Pam Michell (Armando) and Jonathan Jacobs (President Jim) to our meeting. They joined speaker Kristen Kosinski to fill out the room.

Since Gwen had given an email report on the Pancake Breakfast at Fire Station 5 recently she simply thanked all who participated. Judith Ciancimino, Don and Gwen took some great photos which are posted on the Club website. Don and Judith also supplied the photos from this week's meeting, for which we thank them. Nice to have visuals!

Gwen went on to break some very gratifying "news." The Hometown News, owned and run by Stephanie Davis, will beImage  reporting and publishing the results of their recent "Best of..." survey.  For several week the HTN has been polling readers for their favorite retailers, events and organizations. They got over 1200 responses. When the publication hits the streets on 8/2 it will announce that the Rotary Club of Playa Venice Sunrise was voted the best non-profit. Judith Wilson is shown holding a "thank you" ad that will appear in that same edition of THN. Congratulations Club and thank you voters!

The next surprise came when President Jim announced and gave out our new Club logo pins to the membership. Gwen and I coordinated with a couple of pin manufacturers to come up with something we can all wear with pride. Thanks to Gwen for her "stick to it" attitude, it wasn't an easy delivery, but it was very worthwhile. As a pin collector since the LA Olympics (1984 not 1932) I value having it!

ImageOur second "Bear Essential" auction got some heavy bidding with Lucy and Gail going at it at the end. Gail won with a $60 bid and gifted it to Lucy. True Rotarian-ism at its best. Lucy is now "have party will travel" with all the fixings for a wine tasting.  Anyone with concert tickets would be well advised to give Lucy a call.

ImageAs mentioned, Kristen Kosinski came this week to tell us about her efforts in founding and supporting The Sambura Project which raises funds for clean water wells to be dug in Africa's Sambura. She gave a passionate and informed presentation opening our eyes to another deep need in the world outside of our "American bubble of blessings."  She so touched the audience that each of the raffle prize winners (Gwen, Kathrine and Lisa) donated the cash that Tom Ryan provided, back to The Sambura Project netting Kristen $90 for the day. Kristen obviously made an impact.

When it rolled around to time for brags Tom Ryan set the bar for both generosity and unique brags. He boasted to be the newest card carrying Medicare member, to the tune of $100. With things looking quite promising for Diane Pollock to be able to return to Venice High School she donated $25 to note the goods news and to highlight her going to the 8/10 Literacy Breakfast. The sad news is, with Diane heading back to VHS and school starting soon, we won't be seeing her each Wed. We know she'll be with us in spirit. With the money wheel spinning around it came back to and landed on Gail. She parted with $25 to let us know that when she and Rob were enjoying a well deserved 3 days in Santa Barbara she didn't miss Fire Station pancakes at all.

Another great meeting with a spectacular Rotary Club!
