With belief that all youth are destined for continued success, Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary is committed in providing financial assistance for students entering higher education institutions. Each spring, we are thrilled to award $1,000 scholarships to 13 deserving high school graduates going to college. Please read below for various scholarships available and apply!
 

ARTS SCHOLARSHIP  

The Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is committed to education and the promotion of young professionals into the fields of Fine Arts, Photography, Music, Theater and Dance.  Therefore, we will be awarding this scholarship to a college-bound senior who wishes to pursue a degree and a career in one of these fields.  Included with your application must be an essay describing your history of participation in your chosen field and why you feel that you are qualified for and should receive this scholarship.  Additionally, applicants are required to include evidence of previous work in the field such as copies of an art portfolio, YouTube or other video, recordings, etc.   If you are a graduating senior who is college bound and meet the following qualifications, you may apply for this Arts Scholarship. Download Application.
 

BRENDA LAVENDER WOMEN IN BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP

Brenda Lavender is a dynamic woman who has spent over twenty-five years working in the field of commercial real estate.  As a minority woman, she is particularly attuned to the challenges that woman face in realizing their educational goals and employment in the many fields of business.  Therefore, it is a pleasure to award a young woman with a scholarship to pursue a college degree in business. Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is looking for a woman candidate who is excited to pursue their education in a specific area of business, including but not limited to accounting, finance, real estate, marketing, management or human resources.  Included with your application must be an essay describing your passion for and/or experience in your chosen field and why you feel that you should receive this scholarship.  Download Application.
 

CAROL GOLDSTEIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Carol Goldstein was a long-time resident of Culver City who supported Rotary and passed away several years ago.  She was a dynamic woman who through courage, tenacity and commitment became a successful business-woman despite limited educational opportunities.  She believed in hard work and dedication and giving back to her community.  Her family wishes to remember her kind and giving spirit through the endowment of this scholarship. Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is looking for a candidate who is excited to pursue their education and career, particularly in a vocational school or junior college.  This scholarship is needs-based. Download Application. 
 

DON CULTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Don Culton was a dynamic Rotarian who was a leader in our community for many years and an educator at West Los Angeles College and throughout the world.  Don devoted countless hours to Rotary both locally and throughout the world and reminded us that we can unite people throughout the world through friendship and service  As such, it is fitting that Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club will award a scholarship in memory of Don and his tremendous service to education and Rotary. The recipient of this scholarship must demonstrate in an essay how they are a “global thinker” and how through volunteerism they have made or will make a positive impact in international relations. If you are a graduating senior who is college bound and meet the following qualifications, you may apply for the Don Culton Memorial Scholarship.  Because of Don’s tenure at WLA College, preference will be given to someone who is pursuing a Junior College admission.  Download Application.

 

GWEN VUCHSAS PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Gwen Vuchsas is currently the Club President of the Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club.   Gwen was born and raised in Santa Monica, California and attended Santa Monica High School.  She was from a very low income family and did not have many opportunities growing up and attending college was not an option. In fact, no one in her family had ever attended college.  Gwen went to work out of necessity immediately upon high school graduation however has always felt that education was the key to opening doors and making dreams come true.   In fact, she made certain her children broke that barrier as both attended college.  The recipient of this scholarship must be the first to attend college in the family and demonstrate in an essay why they believe education is the key to success in life and careers.  If you are a graduating senior who is college bound and meet the following qualifications, you may apply for the Gwen Vuchsas Presidential Scholarship. INTERACT SCHOLARSHIP  

Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is committed to the youth of our community and supports those who have shown commitment to an Interact Club during their high school tenure.   This scholarship is given to an Interactor excelling in their education and in contributing service to their community.  If you are a graduating senior who is college bound and meet the following qualifications, you may apply for the Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club Interact Scholarship.  Download Application. 
 

LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

RAINBOW ACRES NATURAL FOOD SCHOLARSHIP  

The Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is committed to making a positive impact in our community.  Therefore, we will be awarding this scholarship to a high school senior who has a bold vision to be a force for good.  Your application must include an essay on how you plan to develop your passion and career path to make a significant contribution in your community and the world.  Howard Pollack, Owner of Rainbow Acres Natural Foods, created this scholarship to empower the next generation of students who have the motivation, resilience and entrepreneurial spirit to make a difference and need the means to benefit from college.  Howard is a born entrepreneur who is proud of how he operates his natural food market and how he motivates and empowers his staff.  His is known for his unwavering generosity to the local community.  If you are graduating senior and meet the following qualifications, you may apply for this very special scholarship. SERVICE ABOVE SELF SCHOLARSHIP

TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA SCHOLARSHIP

The Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is committed to supporting passionate individuals in the fields of technology and media.  College-bound high-school seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in information technology (IT) support, computer programming, mobile application and website development , software engineering, hardware engineering, cybersecurity, IT consulting, or digital media creation (film, television, social media) and meet the criteria below are strongly encouraged to apply.  Along with your application, please submit a 250-700 word essay demonstrating your passion for technology or media.  Be sure to discuss how you became interested in this field, who/what inspires you in this line of work, and your career goals. Additionally, you are encouraged to provide a portfolio or description of any previous work you have done in the field of technology and media. Download Application.
 

TONY STEINHART CADET SCHOLARSHIP

TRUDY BIRD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Trudy Bird was a dynamic woman – who was a committed wife, mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family and friends.  She had a generous spirit and always offered her time, talents and treasures to those in need.  She believed in the value of hard work, which no doubt emanated from her early years of working in her family grocery store in the 1930s.  Her appreciation for the value of money earned through hard work remained with her during her lifetime and as such, it seems only appropriate that her family remember her kind and giving spirit with the endowment of a scholarship for a hard-working and committed student who needs help to achieve a dream. Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is looking for a candidate who is excited to pursue their education and career, particularly in a vocational school or junior college, and feel that their efforts to date make them worthy of this scholarship.  This scholarship is need based. The Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is committed to education and the promotion of young women into fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  Therefore, we will be awarding this scholarship to a college-bound woman who wishes to pursue a degree and a career in one of these fields.
