Apr. 16, 2021 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Every year, MVFC holds a community Literacy Fair that encourages children and students to read and learn. Children of all ages can drop by the center on a Saturday, to pick up free books to read, make crafts, listen to guests read stories, and their families can socialize and learn more about local resources, while also enjoying lunch and listening to jazz band. However, in light of the ongoing pandemic, unfortunately MVFC had to adjust this event this year. We have supported this event the past few years. On Friday April 16, 2021 at 4:00pm – MVFC and its sponsors, Echoes of Hope, ABC 7, and Disney have provided meals and books to give away during the event. MVFC is requesting at least 4 PVS Rotarian Volunteers to help set up, and pass out bags of books to children and family during the event! If you are interested and can volunteer, please e-mail me at jjenrotary@gmail.com and copy Lucia Diaz at ldiaz@marvistafc.org ASAP. You will need to arrive around 3:30pm to help set up. Please don't forget your Rotary attire and face masks!

Apr. 17, 2021 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
In partnership with the Ballona Creek Renaissance, the Culver City Interact Club, Rotary Club of Culver City, and Rotary Club of Inglewood, we are looking for volunteers to help keep our local streets clean, as upcoming storms and weather wash the trash and debris on our local street into the watershed, waterways, and ocean –contaminating the habitat, while also bringing harm to the wildlife. We will help Ballona Creek Renaissance pass out buckets and gloves to the community (so they can use this to clean up) at three (3) pre-designated sites, and will also be participating in cleaning up. Playa Venice Sunrise Rotarians have been assigned the area in from Mar Vista Family Center on 5075 S. Slauson Avenue. Come join us this Saturday on April 17, 2021 from 9:00am to Noon, as we will do our part to keep the neighborhood clean of debris and trash. The weather is forecasted to be in the mid 70’s, sunny, nice, and it will be a great day to be outside and socially distanced. Don’t forget to put on some sunscreen, wear your Rotary gear and Face masks! Please email me at jjenrotary@gmail.com to RSVP. |

Ending the Pandemic with UNICEF
May 12, 2021 8:00 a.m.
Bridget Maxim, Manager of Philanthropic Partnerships at UNICEF will be joining us to speak about how ending the pandemic with UNICEF. UNICEF, as the largest single vaccine buyer in the world, and the organization that has vaccinated 45% of the world’s children, has been chosen to activate our robust infrastructure to procure and distribute over 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines equitably around the globe through the COVAX facility. COVAX is ensuring that 92 low and middle-income countries have equitable access to COVID vaccines regardless of the ability to pay for them. This is the largest humanitarian response any organization has ever undertaken, and UNICEF is working around the clock as vaccines touch down in more countries each day. We are calling on partners to join us in putting an end to the pandemic, for all. Bridget Maxim has a background in education, business and fundraising. Her career began as a middle school science teacher, an experience that shaped her deep rooted passion for children’s rights. She then worked at the National Geographic Society and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering to raise critical funds that progressed science and enhanced our understanding of the world. Her desire to make the world a better place for future generations and children then led her to her current role at UNICEF USA where she is Manager of Philanthropic Partnerships, including UNICEF USA’s partnership for children with disabilities with Special Olympics International. Bridget holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Sciences and an MBA from USC as well as a Master’s in Education from the University of Missouri - St. Louis. |

We an awesome and fun PVS Bike Ride scheduled for this Saturday morning, May 15, 2021. We will be meeting in Venice at Tore’s, and riding out toe Will Rodgers Beach Park where breakfast will be served). The ride there and back is only a few miles, on an easy, low elevation paved path. Bring your bike and bike helmet, and come for some fellowship, exercise, and the great outdoors (since we live so close to the beach). For those attending (like me), there should be ample time to make it home, wash up, and still attend the day 2 of the District Conference as well.

PVS Rotarian Rob DeCou is at it again with the long endurance challenges for a good cause and to benefit the community. On Saturday August 14th Rob will be starting a 68 mile hike/run through the Santa Monica Mountain range. Let's get out there and support and encourage him! The 68-mile Backbone Trail follows the spine of the Santa Monica Mountains from Los Angeles to Point Mugu in Ventura County. Typically, a thru hike of the Backbone Trail is achieved in 7 to 9 days. Rob will attempt to complete the entire trail in 24 hours! (https://www.trailmagicadventures.com/about-the-backbone-trail) Proceeds from this event/fundraiser will go to benefit the 1736 Family Crisis Center which supports domestic violence survivors, runaway and homeless youths, and persons in crisis. Notwithstanding the above, we are gathering Rotarians and Friends to join Rob on Saturday August 14, at 9:00 a.m. at Will Rogers Park, to cheer him on, hike a part of the trail with him (as much as you deem fit), send him on his way, and just drop by for some fellowship. If you are interested in cheering Rob on at the starting line, hiking a few feet or miles with him, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me (Jerry Jen) at jjenrotary@gmail.com.
