Update on LAX Landside Access Modernization Program

Stephanie is the Director of Communications for the LAX Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP), overseeing all aspects of communications and community outreach for the $5.5 billion project. In this role, Stephanie manages the communication efforts for consultants and contractors for the various projects, as well as works closely with the LAX External Affairs Division to ensure stakeholders and community members receive updates on developments and impacts for the LAMP project. She also sits on the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, representing the airport, and is the liaison to the Gateway Los Angeles Business Improvement District. Prior to joining LAX, Stephanie worked in sports communications. She earned her Master’s Degree in Sport Management and her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Cal State Long Beach

Nick Melvoin is proud to serve the dynamic communities of District 4 on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education. Nick’s work is focused on increasing parent and community engagement, transparency and accountability; directing more resources to schools; protecting our most vulnerable students; and bringing a new spirit of partnership and collaboration to LA’s public schools. He chairs the district's "Continuous Improvement Data Committee," as well as serving on committees related to legislative advocacy, affiliated charter schools, and school safety. Prior to his election, Nick worked as a teacher, public interest attorney, nonprofit director, and an active board member of a number of community and political organizations. Nick has also worked in the Obama White House and the US Attorney’s office. Nick is a graduate of Harvard College, NYU School of Law (Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar), and Loyola Marymount University’s School of Education. He was last year’s recipient of the Los Angeles Young Democrat of the Year Award. |

Friends of Ballona Wetlands

Neysa is the Manager of Friends of Ballona Wetlands. She will be telling us about their work in the wetlands! As the Manager of Scientific Programs for Friends of Ballona Wetlands, Neysa hopes to promote endangered and sensitive species habitat protection and restoration, while educating the public about the importance of nature, especially in the urban sprawl of Los Angeles. Neysa has always had a passion for the environment. She graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology. At college, Neysa discovered her fondness for birds and wetlands, and their importance in local urban ecosystems. Seeking to share this passion with others and to expand on it through biological research, Neysa came to work with Friends of Ballona Wetlands (FBW). This non-profit achieves the perfect balance between protecting wetlands, educating the public, and promoting wildlife appreciation and understanding. Neysa completed a Master of Natural Resources Degree from Oregon State University, with an emphasis in Wildlife Management. Through this program, and the partnership with local Environmental Scientist, Dr. Edith Read, Neysa has done research in the Ballona Freshwater Marsh studying maintenance impacts on nesting wetland birds. |

Fellow Rotarian Rob DeCou will be speaking at his home club meeting on Wednesday Sept. 16, 2020 regarding his upcoming Uberman Race, and to bring more awareness to combat human trafficking. https://playavenice.org/page/human-trafficking/ Over the past several years, Rotarian Rob DeCou has focused his ultra-endurance races towards raising money and awareness to help end polio and fight human trafficking. In 2017, Rob completed a 146-mile ultra-marathon in Badwater Basin, becoming the 124th known person to cover this distance on foot known as the"World's Toughest Foot Race", and in doing so, raised awareness and nearly $700,000 for End Polio Now in collaboration with District Governor Cozette Vergari. In 2019, Rob swam over 31 miles across the Strait of Juan de Fuca from the U.S. to Canada, raising $10,000 for trafficking prevention efforts. In June 2020, Rob completed an “Everesting” climb, cycling uphill 29,029 feet over 230 miles in just under 27 hours, raising over $3,500 for HOPE61. Most recently, this July Rob cycled over 625 miles in the Race Across Oregon, an unforgiving course with nearly 50,000 feet of unending climbing, raising over $8,000 for In Our Backyard and bringing awareness to human trafficking. On October 8, 2020, Rob will be compete in Uberman, the “World’s Toughest Ultra Ironman” and raise the bar not just in the endurance arena but also in the hopes of creating a significant impact by partnering with local organizations in the Greater Los Angeles area that are in the trenches with the fight against human trafficking.

Uberman / Bringing Awareness to Human Trafficking

Rob is the Executive Producer and Co-Founder at Lux Virtual, a creative studio that facilitates strategic marketing, with a focus on animated videos, and immersive experiences to simplify and illuminate brilliant ideas. Highly involved in ultra-endurance sports, to raise awareness and build community around important issues. In 2017, Rob completed a 146-mile run across Death Valley to the top of Mt. Whitney raising almost $700,000 for End Polio Now, Rotary’s global campaign to eradicate polio. The prior year, Rob completed the solo Race Across America, known as “the World’s Toughest Bicycle Race”, a 3,000-mile journey from coast to coast raising over $21,000 to fund brain cancer research. Rob recently completed a 31-mile swim from Port Angeles Washington to Victoria Canada across the Strait of Juan de Fuca raising over $10,000. On October 8, 2020 Rob will be taking on the world’s toughest ultra-ironman known as Uberman and projecting raising over $100,000, while also increasing awareness and prevention of Human Trafficking. Mark has over 35 years of legal experience, including 20 years of experience as a mediator and arbitrator. Mark has served on the Los Angeles Superior Court alternative dispute resolution panel since 1994 and has handled private mediations and arbitrations with an emphasis on cross-cultural disputes since 2005. Over the past three decades, he has been involved in the resolution of thousands of cases. Please welcome our District's Peace Chair Mark Ameli on Wednesday, who will graciously provide us with wonderful insight and information on implicit bias, and how that relates to peace. THE WPV CARES iPAD CHALLENGE WPV has launched the WPV CARES iPad Challenge! While most of us have technology that enables us to virtually interact with family and friends, some of our seniors lack the devices, internet capabilities, and knowledge to do so. Our goal is to collect 75 gently used or new iPads (or tablets), and establish a fund that will be used to provide financial support to those clients who cannot afford internet/WiFi connectivity. All our senior recipients will also receive one-on-one training on their new devices, free of charge, in the comfort and safety of their own homes.
ABOUT WPV WPV, or Westside Pacific Villages, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Los Angeles celebrating our 10th year of service; we serve low-income seniors, providing programs and resources that allow our members to remain healthy and happy as they age-in-place. On October 8, Rob will compete in the Uberman. Uberman is the world’s most challenging Ultra Triathlon. The 556 mile course goes from the Mists of Avalon to the Snows of Mount Whitney. Starting on Catalina Island, participants swim 21 miles in the open Pacific Ocean to the shores of Palos Verdes. The 400 mile bike route leaves the city of Angels and climbs 20,000 vertical feet before descending to Badwater basin, at 200 feet below sea level, the lowest point in North America. From Badwater, athletes run 135 miles through Death Valley before ascending 13,000 feet to the trailhead @ Mt Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental United States. The Power of Starting (Fitness / Health)

Jeff Blair (M.S.) has been recognized in American and international publications as a fitness expert. He is a certified personal trainer, has authored published research and served as an expert on a national academic research review project. During our program, Jeff Blair will share with us the counterintuitive ideas about creating a successful fitness routine and explain how less can be more in fitness. Jeff will also explain how strength training can allow you to enjoy your life in richer and more fulfilling ways than you might realize. Especially now, when many of us are working from home, and no longer getting up and out as much as we use to. This will be an fun, interesting, and informative program. We are officially starting our Thursday Supper Club. If you joined us for the last one, you know we had a blast. If you didn't, it is not too late to start now. This will be a regular event once a month, on the FIRST THURSDAY of each month. So the next one will be on November 5th at 5 PM. The Thursday Supper Club is lead by a Rotarian Chefs Gail Goldstein and Rob Bird for that evening. A receipe is determined beforehand, and sent out to all who are interested in participating so that everyone has time to obtain the ingredients and make any necessary preparations. The receipes show be easy for all levels of cooks, and can be completed ideally within an hour. Looking for host chef volunteers for the next months. 36th Annual VHS Jackets of Excellence - 12/11/2020 The VHS Jackets of Excellence Program seeks to recognize, acknowledge, and highlight students at Venice High School who have excelled in their academic studies. Students must have an overall GPA of 3.75, and cannot have more than 7 absences per year at VHS. Similar to our acknowledgement of students who participate on sports teams with their letterman jackets, this program seeks to provide such recognition to those students who have worked hard with in their academics.
