Venice High School Interacters participate in the 24 hr. relay to help fight Cancer.
This is the Venice High School Interact location at the Relay for Life, which was sponsored by the Cancer Society. The Interacters had someone walking for 24 hours starting at 9am on Saturday to 9am on Sunday. The students raised several hundred dollars and several club members including Gail Goldstein, Peter Smythe, Tom Ryan and others. I especially want to thank Peter Smythe, Tom Ryan, Diane Pollack, and Katie Butler who helped take 4 hour stints to act as chaperones to the Interact club members. And a very special thanks goes to Tom Ryan who took the 1 am to 5 am shift. One of the Interactors walked 20 miles. Tore |

Mama Hill has dedicated herself to helping "at risk youths." Rotarian Monica Trepany is heading the effort to support Mama Hill with monthly donations towards pizza dinners and needed supply purchases. There is a link to Mama Hill's website on our Homepage. Here is some biographical information on Mama Hill followed by a breakdown of some of their needs. Millicent Hill is a retired school teacher with LAUSD. Over her 45-year career as an award-winning educator, poet, and activist, Millicent has changed the lives of thousands of youngsters through her innovative teaching style. Today she and her small staff cover an array of issues within the core curricula-from anger management to teen pregnancy-as most of her youngsters are living under the cloud of violence, grief, abandonment or abuse, which all too often impedes their ability to learn. |

Our annual Pancake Breakfast at Fire Station No. 5 was held from 8am to 11am at Fire Station No. 5 in Westchester. This event has been held every summer for the past 13 years to raise funds for the local firefighters. Playa Venice Sunrise runs the event in partnership with the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotel who provides all the food as well as the Playa del Rey Moms Club who provide crafts and activities for the kids.

Rotary is very close to eradicating polio worldwide, but it must be eliminated in every country or it will reappear where it has been wiped out. Cases have been reported in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria. Your tax deductable gift to the Playa Sunrise Foundation will make this happen. You can make a difference! Our mailing address is PO Box 10883 Marina del Rey CA 90295. Thank you and God bless you!

At our Feb.24th meeting Jim Vuchsas gave us a beautiful invocation. It was based on Jerry Lewis' comment upon receiving a humanitarian award at the annual Academy Awards ceremony. We are proud to share these insightful, Rotary like sentiments |

Microsoft's Bill Gates says the grant will go to Rotary International. A World Health Organization expert estimates that it would cost $2 billion to stamp out the last traces of the polio virus. |
